Thought on Super Smash Bros Ultimate
So now that some time has passed, I wanted to give my thoughts on Super Smash Bros Ultimate
First, I LOVE the concept. Although I expected a lot of cuts, its cool to see Nintendo bringing back every character. I will also say the trailer does a great job of highlighting this, and it’s a good trailer overall. I can understand why fans will be really excited by this as fans typically hate cuts. However, we play Smash Bros games for the new characters, and it looks like this game may be light in this area. So far, only two new characters have been announced. While there will likely be more, I don’t expect it will be much (with the game’s director, Sakurai, stating not to expect too many). At the same time, of the 7 characters that are returning, only a few are truly unique with characters like Pichu, Young Link and Wolf being based on other characters.
But even if they add some more characters, would it be enough given the fact that most of the stages are old too? Nintendo has only shown off two new stages (and teased another). Moreover, Smash Bros for 3DS and Wii U already featured most of the stages from Brawl and a few stages from Melee. So even considering the idea that the stages feel fresh because we haven’t played on them in a while, it would only apply to a select few Melee and 64 stages.
My concern is that while the amount of content is impressive, we’ll get bored of it much faster than expected. Almost everything in this game is something we’ve seen from older games. Characters we’ve played with before, and stages we played on before. The older titles added a lot of new content to keep us going. This one is going in the opposite direction. I think when people said they wanted all the characters back, they were saying this on the prospect we’d get a lot of new stuff too. It will be interesting to see what Smash fans want more: new content or bringing back old content.
I love Smash Bros, and I want to love this game. But it’s hard when you look at and it looks so similar to the Wii U titles (which may be where the “it’s a port” comments are coming from). Even watching the Treehouse was painful as it would often showed matches that I could easily recreate in the Wii U game. I’m concern if I get this game, it would get dull very quickly.
For me, this is my Ugly Puppy game. I want to love this little puppy, take care of him, play with him, feel his little puppy kisses on my face. But God this puppy is so ugly. I look at the puppy and I want to quince, but deep down I want to love it like I loved all the other Smash Bros puppies. Thus, I’m torn. I want to spend the $60, take the puppy home and play with him, yet I may be better served to leave him at the pet store.
As I’m writing this, there are 65 characters (based on the character count, with Ridley being 65). If there are at least 70 characters, I will consider getting the game (given modes, stages, future updates ect). If there are 72, I will get it in a heartbeat. Essentially, 70 is my breaking point. Right now, I don’t plan to get the game, but I’m keeping tabs on it in case Nintendo announces enough new stuff to put me over the edge. While I LOVE the fact everyone is coming back, I also want some content I could get in the other Smash Bros games.
So that is my overall thoughts on the game. With that, I wanted to add a few miscellaneous things I like and don’t like
- · I really like the new theme. I felt like Smash Wii U’s was very dull. This one is much better, and I like the build up. It feels like it suits the title.
- · I’m glad they added Ridley and Daisy. It’s crazy to see Ridley in Smash, and I know there was a coalition of Daisy fans that wanted to see the character.
- · I really don’t like the Zelda character designs. I think it was better to keep them consistent with the series. This is a matter of personal preference, and I could see why some people would prefer this direction.
- · The biggest mistake was bringing Xander back as the announcer. Nothing against him, but I feel like each Smash game differentiated itself by having a different announcer. He’s a good announcer but it should have been someone different.
- · I DON’T like that KOing trophies gives you a point. This really messes with the flow of time matches I think (and this is what my friends mostly play). I hope you can turn this off.
- · The dodges getting weaker over time is a good change. A lot of the time, it was better to retreat with back rolls, so this make rolling less useful for movement when that’s not the purpose of it.
- · Like that each stage has a Battlefield form but they should have called them “Alpha” not just “Battlefield”.
